Aeriae Interview, plus movement on live front

Chris Downton recently interviewed me for Cyclic Defrost magazine. The interview's now out in both the online and print editions of the magazine. The latter are available free in select record stores around Australia.

Read the interview online

In the interview I mention the ongoing work on a live incarnation of Aeriae. It looks extremely likely at this point that, with the help of Clan Analogue (Ant Banister in particular) I will play my first gig in Sydney in January.

New article about the AMay videoclip over at 'What Is The Apple IIGS?'

Alex Lee, who runs the website 'What Is The Apple IIGS?' all about my favourite 8/16-bit computer, has published a very complimentary article about the AMay videoclip.

New Aeriae remix: CHAINGANG's 'Get Off My Stage' playing on FBi

CHAINGANG are my fave Sydney rockers and just one of my favourite bands. I wasn't sure if remixing them would work, or if it the result could be an Aeriae track anyway, but it did and it could be respectively. That great institution FBi are also gonna spin it some.

Auricular Records release 13th Audio Magazine, featuring 'Novelle Sis'

'20 years of difficult music' goes the Auricular Records tagline. They started as a little record store in the Lower Haight neighborhood of San Francisco, hosting in-stores of ambitious music and releasing audio magazines on cassette. The philosophies haven't changed over time but the technology has. I'm pleased to be a part of Auricular's return to mixtaping, with Novelle Sis appearing on their new 15 year hiatus-breaking release Auricular Audio Magazine 13.

The 16 track compilation is available as a digital download internationally through all the usual stores, or as a CD directly from Auricular. I well recommend it, and not just 'cos I'm on it.

AMay competing in the Portable Film Festival

The videoclip for AMay is currently up and running in the Portable Film Festival.

Media bits: Indie Revolution and Wonkavision print ad

NY's The Indie Revolution played AMay this weekend. It's the first track in their broadcast / podcast for Sunday 11th August, 2008.

There's also a cool Aeriae ad in Wonkavision Magazine #42, which is out on the stands now.
Check it out on the Press page.

Heads up from Release Magazine, plus performance ideas

1 _ Alternative and electronic music watchers Release gave Aeriae the nod today. To them I say, 'Cheers!'

2 _ I have begun to work on a live performance. The nature of it is decided principally by the fact that I don't find it interesting to watch a person behind a laptop, especially when 100% of the gestures making the music are not discernible. Second, this music is way complicated. Compositionally speaking, this is part of the genre's great appeal to me - that the compositions aren't defined or limited by what a human can do in real time. For these reasons I wondered for a long time if there was any way to perform this music that would satisfy me. This year I saw Moldover's video on Controllerism. His methods are informed significantly by DJ practice, which is something I've never had any interest in, but the whole thing was striking, practical, visual and creatively legitimate. I'm taking what he's generously offered as a starting point and am working on applying it to my own work. It's been very hard so far, but I've got the hardware, I'm building stuff with the software, and it is coming together. I've got a live version of AMay which I muck up 60% of the time, and I'm working on Skirr. What lies ahead is months of practice, refinement, track translation and building. So it's quite a ways off, but I believe I'll get there, and be able to offer a live version of Aeriae.

New Aeriae remix: Delta's 'Believe Again'

I like Delta Goodrem plenty, a fact which seems to surprise most folk I know. I now present my (COMPLETELY UNOFFICIAL) Aeriae take on 'Believe Again'. At this point, somehow it's my favourite thing I've released this year.

Background info: Delta's 'You Will Only Break My Heart' single (got it for the princely sum of $4.99 at JB Hi-Fi as I recall) came with a U-Myx version of 'Believe Again' on the B-side. U-Myx is kind of the Fisher Price of the remix world, allowing folks to produce very simple remixes of a given track using colourful onscreen blocks. Now I didn't use U-Myx to remix the track (it would be physically impossible to achieve anything like this with U-Myx) but what U-Myx offered me was access to a lot of isolated audio tracks from Believe Again.

Aeriae remix of Catcall's 'August' playing on FBi

I heard Catcall's 'August' on FBi over summer and was immediately a big fan of the track. I did a remix of the track in January; Catcall was well chuffed. The remix is now doing the rounds on FBi FM.

'Hermiones' is Track Of The Week at

I've been on for a few years now, and while I've scored 'Track Of The Day' many times, I never managed to crack their elusive-seeming Top 20 in the Experimental Electronica genre until now. My (relatively weird) second B-side from Hold R1, Hermiones, has done the trick and got the Track Of The Week slot in the process. The moral of this story is that you just can't pick how any particular track will be received.

Hold R1 reviewed in Cyclic Defrost Magazine March 2008

New review of the album:

New track: Lenticular Cup

In January I participated in The Twentieth Project, in which an assortment of artists record a track in the space of a day. The results are gathered on a compilation CD. My track Lenticular Cup appears on the January 20th, 2008 CD.

Aeriae on radio

Radio stations recently playing Aeriae:

CD now at Red Eye, plus tracks in progress

You can now buy Hold R1 in Red Eye Records, York St, Sydney. Incidentally this is my fave record shop in the world, so this is way cool!

... and with the madness of xmas out of the way I'm back to working on new tracks. One I completed from go to woe in a day as part of the 20th Project for January, and it'll be released by them accordingly. I'm also working on two other originals and a weird/grime/slowed-down-ravey remix of a track I heard on FBi by another Sydney artist.

AMay videoclip on LiveMusicMedia LI, NY throughout February

Live in the Long Island, New York area or have access to channel 115 there? Live Music Media (LMM TV 115) will be playing the AMay videoclip every Saturday during February. The show starts at 11PM each Saturday. If you haven't seen/heard it uncompressed from a big screen, trust me, it's freaking excellent.
